The Dickson-Williams mansion at Greeneville, Tenn. Built in 1821 it has seen its share of dignitaries, Davy Crockett, more than one U.S. President & during the civil war it was a billet to officers on both sides of the conflict. John Hunt Morgan spent his last night on this sweet earth in an upstairs bedroom. A morning in Sept, 1864 Morgan was "flushed" out & shot in the homes garden area. General Gillem & his 13th Tenn Vol Calvary had done the deed. On that morning as Gillem rode into town one of his troops commented that the gen'al was itching for a fight. It has long been a source of speculation of exactly how Gillem knew of Morgan's location. After Morgan's death his body was drug up & down the streets to Union cheers & finally thrown in a ditch. At the next meeting of these two forces Gillem's men would pay for this indiscretion.
The plack on the front of this old church states: "GREENEVILLE (Tenn) CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Founded 1841 The original log church on Irish Street served until 1860 when the present structure was began on land purchased from Andrew Johnson. The war between the states saw the church used as a hospital and stable. The cannon ball in the front wall was fired there September 4, 1864 during the skirmish in which General John H Morgan lost his life". Believe me when I tell you that my photograph does this building NO justice.

Here's a point of interest our out of town friends may have trouble locating. The old covered bridge near Warrensburg, NE Tenn. This ford in the Little Chucky would have been a link for troops moving from the mountains of Western North Carolina traveling to the Knoxville/Cumberland Gap, Tenn area. The bridge does not date to the civil war but is registrated with the National Historic Society.
Here's about a 2 foot tall war log from the Blue Springs community of NE Tenn. This log contains one "large sized" cannister ball directly in the center of the log....the same size cannister Burnside's Corps used at Blue Springs. The log has also been hit by 2 other 0.69 caliber round balls. The log still has shag bark hickory bark on it.   Here's a house that if you do not see it here....you may never see it. Longstreet's billet at Russellville, NE Tenn where he wintered 1863-64. Bulls Gap, Morristown, Dandridge, New Market, Mossy Creek, Greeneville, Rogersville, Newport are all just a short drive away & all saw action all thru the war but especially this winter. At this stage of the war this country was so "poor" that Longstreet had to spread his men out over 6 or so many counties just to feed them. This home stood vacant for years although it has been recognized by the state. My understanding now it is in the hands of private investors who are content to maintain as original as possible for its historical significant.
