The Dickson-Williams mansion at Greeneville, Tenn. Built in 1821 it has seen its share of dignitaries, Davy Crockett, more than one U.S. President & during the civil war it was a billet to officers on both sides of the conflict. John Hunt Morgan spent his last night on this sweet earth in an upstairs bedroom. A morning in Sept, 1864 Morgan was "flushed" out & shot in the homes garden area. General Gillem & his 13th Tenn Vol Calvary had done the deed. On that morning as Gillem rode into town one of his troops commented that the gen'al was itching for a fight. It has long been a source of speculation of exactly how Gillem knew of Morgan's location. After Morgan's death his body was drug up & down the streets to Union cheers & finally thrown in a ditch. At the next meeting of these two forces Gillem's men would regret this indiscretion.
The plack on the front of this old church states: "GREENEVILLE (Tenn) CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Founded 1841 The original log church on Irish Street served until 1860 when the present structure was began on land purchased from Andrew Johnson.   Here's a point of interest our out of town friends may have trouble locating. The old covered bridge near Warrensburg, NE Tenn. This ford in the Little Chucky would have been a link for troops moving from the mountains of Western North Carolina traveling to the Knoxville/Cumberland Gap, Tenn area. The bridge does not date to the civil war but is registrated with the National Historic Society.
Here's about a 2 foot tall war log from the Blue Springs community of NE Tenn. This log contains one "large sized" cannister ball directly in the center of the log....the same size cannister Burnside's Corps used at Blue Springs. The log has also been hit by 2 other 0.69 caliber round balls. The log still has shag bark hickory bark on it. When you have this log "in hand" you can see where the once live tree tried to grow over or heal its wounds inflicted by all this flying metal. Truely a one of a kind relic.

To me Sycamore Shoals was one of those places that I have heard of but I didn't really know why?? By 1760 Carter Co Tenn had seen an influx of European settlers from the East. Here in 1772 early settlers established the Watauga Association which was one of the 1st constitutional governments West of the Appalachian Mountains.....this helped set a presentient for all lands West of this point. 1775 saw Daniel Boone help negotiate the Tready of Sycamore Shoals.....a land purchase of large portions of modern day Kentucky & Tenn. from the Cherokee Indian Nation. The following year Ft Watauga (shown) helped thwart an invasion during the Cherokee Wars. It was during these wars settlers like Nancy Ward & John Sevier made their marks on history.
At the peak of the American Revolution the frontier milita Overmountain Men were mustered at Sycamore Shoals in prepration for the march & victory at the Battle of Kings Mtn. During the American Civil War this very area was used as a path to the Cumberland Gap for loyal union men wanting to enlist. Union pilots & bushwackers loved the geography of this area. Heading West take a left & you are in the flatlands/foot hills. Take a right & you are in the big mountains which travel there for the unprepared was at best hazardous. These mtns were also a natural boundry between the Confederacy in Virginia & many loyalist of NE Tenn. Sidenote...the shoals on the Watuga River is an easy 1/2 mile walk behind Ft Watauga & is a great place to wade & fish.

Another one off the beaten path. Welcome back to the banks of the Nolichucky river. The Earnest Fort house. Built by Henry Ernest (Heinrich Ernst) in 1782 in what was then "Indian Terriority" North Carolina, now extreme NE Tenn. Earnest served with the Virginia Militia in the French & Indian War & was loyal to the patriot cause during the American revolution. The 1st story of this home is built with thick limestone slabs & mortar. The 2nd & 3rd stories are built of notched logs & mortar complete with a 3 story limestone chimmney. There is not a window in either end of this home. One of the first toll bridges across this river was located here. This home is just down stream from the David Crockett birthplace. The Earnest family were large farmland holders & were also slave holders which is unusual for this part of Tenn. Not far from this site East Tennessee's own CS General "Mudwall" Jackson captured several Ohio troops in a skirmish over the E TN & VA RR. Jackson's troops would have moved thru this area before & after this engagement. This home has always been in private hands.
Here's a house that if you do not see it here....you may never see it. Confederate General Longstreet's billet at Russellville, NE Tenn where he wintered 1863-64. Bulls Gap, Morristown, Dandridge, New Market, Mossy Creek, Greeneville, Rogersville, Newport are all just a short drive away & all saw action all thru the war but especially this winter. At this stage of the war this country was so "poor" that Longstreet had to spread his men out over 6 or so many counties just to feed them. This home stood vacant for years although it has been recognized by the state. My understanding now it is in the hands of private investors who are content to maintain as original as possible for its historical significant.
